self-improvement book list

I don’t know who needs this right now, but I’ve compiled a list of self-improvement books. A few I’ve read and the others came recommended to me by trusty friends.

I love many of the books for the way they are written. Many self-help and spiritual books can be so vague and use poetic language. Nothing wrong with that, that’s just not how I like to consume this type of book. I prefer clear almost instructional info that I can summarize on a notepad and put into practice bit by bit each day.

Brain Wash: detox your ming for clearer thinking, deeper relationships, and lasting happiness by David Perlmutter

I haven’t read this one but it’s in my cart rn. It’s about contemporary life and our modern behaviours that leave us lonely, anxious, depressed, and overweight. More so now than ever before. The coolest part is that there’s a “10-day bootcamp” in the book to refocus your life.

Beauty Sick: how the cultural obsession with appearance hurts girls and women by Renee Engeln

The realm of beauty and self-acceptance is a hot mess. The same women that I look up to for their kind and strong words of empowerment and self love also use Facetune from time to time to brighten this, lift that, etc. It isn’t black and white. It’s confusing af. This book is amazing; scientific studies combined with voices of powerful women around the world, discussing how we need to break free from destructive patterns (many that we aren’t even conscious of).

101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think by Brianna Wiest

I cherish this book for a few reasons – I discovered Brianna just as the new year started. Then, a few days before my birthday end of January, I saw a contest on instagram to win her book (this book) so I entered. I’ve never worn anything in my life, nothing, and on my birthday I got a DM congratulating me on winning the goddam book! So cool. I’ve been taking it slow and reading a few pages every since then. It’s the kind of book you want to read slowly and discuss things that come up with your friends. It’s incredible and I’d recommend to everyone to read it!

Super blunt and you’ll be chuckling to yourself the whole time.

The Surrender Experiment by Michael Alan Singer

A few people have recommended this book to me so I’m going to order it. From what I heard, it’s a crazy true story about the author’s experience being raided by the FBI, then reaching a spiritual height while his life – to the outside world – is spiralling out of order.
